URBAN ASSAULT: DEMETER… All You Need To Know! Posted: 20/02/2017 by John O'Brien
Cork’s newest addition to it’s local metal scene is DEMETER. A black metal influenced group featuring long standing members of the Cork music scene, there’s a lot of experience at hand. This will only be the bands second live outing…
CURRENT LINE-UP…
Ollie O’Shea (Guitars)
Pat Gillen (Bass)
Liam Hughes (Vocals)
Eoin Costello (Drums)
– Where are you from?
“We are all Corkonians.”
– What are your backgrounds?
Ollie (formerly MOLDE, DOMINUS, FOR RUIN), Gillen (HOPE IS NOISE, KAWTIKS), Liam (SOOTHSAYER, KAWTIKS, DAYS OF NIGHT), Costello (STANTONS GRAVE, SLUGBAIT)
“Both Liam and Gillen have played in KAWTIKS, Liam also sang one gig with MOLDE, and Costello took over from Gillen when he left SLUGBAIT. So all band members were well familiar before starting DEMETER.”
– How long have you been active?
“Just over a year now… Gillen and Costello were looking to start something new in the vain of Black Metal and needed a guitarist, so at a work party Gillen had a chat with Ollie, and we had a jam soon after. Finding a vocalist was the biggest challenge, but all 3 members agreed that Liam was the perfect fit, so Liam joined a few months later as he had other commitments at the time.”
– Accomplishments to date!
Still early days for DEMETER with only one gig supporting SOOTHSAYER and they have released the four track demo, “Blight”, available for free download at demeter1.bandcamp.com.
– What are your influences?
“We’re basically into a lot of the same bands and genres which helped when starting off this band. I guess the main idea was to be in the style of Black Metal, but as what can normally happen other influences start sneaking in. So we are not slaves to any particular characteristics of Black Metal, we let the free creative process guide us.”
– Plans for 2017 and beyond?
“We have a few gigs lined up…”
– Feb 25th – Urban Assault, Cork.
– April 1st in On The Rox, Dublin.
– April 7th in Freds, Cork.
“We’ve been writing a few new tunes so will hit the studio again later in the year and record our first EP.”
